We lose serratus anterior muscle function, some lower trap function and all of the shoulder stabilizers are weakened. . What causes this if it isn't from an injury? Always being in a state of poor posture (office workers, dentists) or just simply not hitting the right muscles during your training. Often overworking your pecs and upper traps can add to the problem, if you are not spending enough time working the muscles that act on the scapula itself. It goes without saying, if you have serious pain, or loss of function in the upper back and shoulder area, go see your doc or physio first! . How do you fix it? Strengthening up your serratus anterior is a great place to start. . In the video you can see a serratus anterior exercise on all fours (quadruped), also called Scapular Push-ups (Pro-/Retraction of the Scapula). . Beginner Version with knees on the floor and Advanced Version with knees lifted from the floor. . Activate your CORE muscles before you start the exercise as I explained in my previous post about ‘ACTIVATION OF THE CORE MUSCLES' 🏋️. . Do the movements slow and controlled and work up to 3 sets of 15. . This exercise is essential for a tennis player or any other overhead sport athlete! . Another very good possibility to train the serratus anterior is getting patients to practice crawling on the ground as not only does it get your serratus anterior firing well 🔥but it is also a fundamental human movement that helps restore stability to the shoulder complex! . Lifting a from the ground to the back of a vehicle🏎 can be brutal. Sleep deprivation 💤makes everything more difficult… but don’t sacrifice your body to lift those suckers into the car. With a little awareness 🔍of your movements🤸‍♀️ you can protect yourself. . . Take a second⏱ to set yourself up before lifting. If you are picking up baby, stroller, or car seat, the setup is the same. Stand up tall with ribs stacked🔝 over hips, no rib-thrusting. Pull the shoulder blades down and back⤵️, HINGE at the hip, maintaining a flat back, bend knees as needed to reach object, then lift the object and exhale🌬 with an active core while maintaining a flat back. Get close to the vehicle🚗 and set it down using the same cues. This is essentially a deadlift. 🙋 be aware that core and pelvic floor activation may be impaired following birth. If you are experiencing this there are so many things you can do to help you restore restore proper function! . . When shopping for a stroller practice collapsing and lifting 💪it. Some are quite heavy and this may need to be a consideration when selecting💰 one. It doesn’t take any more time to lift it correctly- you just need to be aware of your movement🤸‍♀️ patterns. Working out 🏋️‍♀️is great, but being aware of your movements the other 22 hours of the day is HUGE. . . And yes, always be aware ⚠️of the tailgate if you are a taller person!
